Attorneys representing Minnesota’s Republican and Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) parties spoke before a special panel of the Minnesota Supreme Court on January 4 in a hearing concerning the placement of Minnesota’s new legislative boundaries.

While redistricting in Minnesota is usually determined by the legislature and the Governor, DFL governor Mark Dayton vetoed the plans passed by the Republican dominated House and Senate this past fall. The case has gone before a special panel for mediation.

Rep. Collin Peterson blasted a state Republican plan to redistrict him into a horizontal district that runs across the state from Moorhead to Duluth, while drawing a safer district right below that for freshman Republican Chip Cravaack.

The long-awaited GOP map reshaping the state’s congressional districts was released Monday, and shows Republicans trying to protect newest House GOP Rep. Chip Cravaack while isolating other DFL strongholds. The map shapes three congressional districts - the northernmost 7th and 8th districts and southernmost 1st district - like horizontal stripes reaching from one end of the state to the other.

Republicans in the Minnesota Senate say they plan to redraw the boundaries of the state's 201 legislative districts just as House Republicans are -- changes that set up a confrontation with Gov. Mark Dayton. A House committee is expected to approve the first part of that plan Tuesday night.
